The trembling began in Elliott’s hands and spread to his arms and legs. He had never tasted fear so potent before. Bitter flavored, it was an icy dish, far colder than the weather, radiating its irresistible chill throughout his body. Any words he might have spoken were frozen in his throat, stricken from expression for the moment.

“You look like you’ve seen a ghost. Find your grandpa did you?” Terrance asked, a sardonic smile on his thin lips.

Elliott stared back at his friend, trying to remember when, if ever, he had experienced such cruelty from him. Even wearing dark clothes and a hood and sunglasses, it was not difficult to be sure that Terrance was before him. It was as though Terrance had been replaced by an evil twin, a doppelganger, who would torment Elliott.

“You’re awfully quiet, you know,” Terrance observed. “It was quite a feat to find you here.”

Each word buffeted Elliott like the sea its breakers, but he couldn’t bring himself to say anything. Processing what was going on that moment preoccupied all of Elliott’s wits.

Terrance sighed loudly and put his hands on his hips. “Maybe I should go. Lara might be a little more interested in talking.”

As Terrance turned to leave, Elliott snapped, “Leave her out of this.”

Crossing his arms over his chest, Terrance retorted, “Fine, but I wasn’t the one who dragged her along, now was I?”

The coolness from before melted under the heat of anger’s kindling. Elliott found his tongue was loosened from its frigid rigidity as well. “What do you want, Terrance?”

“Take it easy,” Terrance said, his brows knitted. Glancing side to side, he muttered, “There’s no sense in getting upset.”

Unable to hold back a snort of disbelief, Elliott replied, “Maybe you’re right. And maybe, you should tell me why you’re here.”

Looking around the clearing, Terrance scowled. “It’s not because of how nice it is here, that’s for sure.”

Seeing his joke did little to improve Elliott’s demeanor, Terrance shrugged. “I guess this was a mistake, but I came to warn you.”

“Warn me?” Elliott questioned, his voice wavering.

Terrance rubbed his face gruffly. “Yeah, goof-ball. You’ve gotten yourself into a pretty fantastic mess. Ohlmstadt was in our office yesterday. Chewed out me, Kendra, the dean of the college…”

“What? The dean of the college? What did Ohlmstadt want?”

“That’s the incredible part, he wouldn’t say, but made it clear that if we didn’t cooperate we would be expelled or worse.”

“Worse, what else could he do?”

“My bet is arrest us,” Terrance said without any sarcasm. “Homeland security agents took our statements. They’re looking for you, Elliott.”

“Did they say what they wanted?” Elliott asked, his voice hollow as the numbed shock from the night before resurged and froze his anger and his limbs and his thoughts in a cascading paralysis.

“Hm, I was hoping you could tell me,” Terrance stated.

“Erhm,” Elliott struggled to clear his throat, “perhaps, it would be better to have your opinion first.”

“If that’s how you want to be about it, fine,” Terrance responded with another shrug. He wasn’t masking any of his annoyance, but at least he was cooperating.
